I challenge you to keep a jar in your kitchen and see how many dead batteries you collect over time.
One thing we have begun in our house is a collection of rechargable batteries. AA and AAA. I keep them all organized in a box. I have a charging station with two chargers and I keep a screwdriver right there to get the batteries out of the item (generally a toy) that needs a recharge.
Yes they care costly to buy but so are regular batteries and they really aren't that much more.
